Businessman of the Year: Job David Pedraza, who
started three companies as well as the Parque Maya
soccer park, was honored by the Cámara de Empresarios
Latinos de Houston. |
Christopher Gilbert Rivera,
formerly of MillerCoors, was named executive of the year;
Cristina Sanchez of U.S. Art Plastics got young
businesswoman of the year; and Andrés Puello of DPA
International received the lifetime achievement award.
Complete with five soccer fields and a replica of Mexico’s
Chichen Itza pyramid, Pedraza’s park, which opened in June,
covers 25 acres.
The Mexican immigrant has not stopped since moving to
America in the early 1990s.
In 1996, after attending Houston Community College and
learning English, he started Pedraza Air Conditioning &
Heating.
Hoping to differentiate his business from others in the
same industry, he focused on working with nonprofit groups
that serve the city’s disabled, elderly and low-income
residents.
Then, his Pedraza Construction Co. began working with the
city to build affordable housing.
"It gives me pleasure for Hispanics to have their own
homes," he said. "We wanted to be part of the system and
try to help and not just work here in the United States."
